It describes how the Soviet Union withdrew their army from Afghanistan after nearly ten years of fighting. Initially, the Soviet Union was unwilling to do so, thinking its army would pacify the Afghans to accept its puppet government. As the Afghan mujahideen, forcefully persisted in defending their values, with the generous support in weapons and necessary logistics mainly by the United States and Saudi Arabia the Soviet new leader Gorbachev finally agreed to withdraw the army under the terms of the agreement for which negotiation had began in 1982 under the auspices of the special envoy of the United Nations general secretary.
